The Most Dangerous Spiders in Florida

SpidermanSpiders may be on everyone’s minds as The Amazing Spider-Man in 3-D was released this week!  Moviegoers will flock to the big screen to check out yet another take on the popular marvel hero. It may be cool to be Peter Parker and get bitten by a radioactive spider which gives you super powers, but it’s not so cool to get bitten by a spider in real life and potentially suffer serious consequences.

Venomous Spiders in Florida

The Black Widow

Black Widow

Florida is a lovely place, but we do have our fair share of pests, including some venomous spiders.

Florida has two types of venomous spiders: widow spiders and recluse spiders.  There are four species of widow spiders in Florida:

  • Latrodectus mactans, the southern black widow
  • Latrodectus variolus, the northern black widow
  • Latrodectus bishopi, the red widow
  • Latrodectus geometricus, the brown widow

Three species of recluse spiders have been found in Florida:

  • Loxosceles reclusa, the brown recluse
  • Loxosceles rufescens, the Mediterranean recluse
  • Loxosceles laeta, the Chilean recluse
